Class Texts for Lecture One
Christianity is not, properly speaking, 'a religion of the book.' It is a religion of the Word, but not uniquely or principally of 'the Word' in either its written or even oral form. It is the religion of the Word, "not of a mute, written word," says St. Bernard, "but of a Word incarnated and living."
Henri de Lubac, tr. Peter Casarella, "Commentaire du preamble et du chapitre I," La revelation divine, I, ed. B-D Dupuy, (Paris: Cerf, 1968), 157-302.
